This refreshing, classic cocktail has been associated with the Kentucky Derby since 1938, and an estimated 120,000 juleps are served at Churchill Downs each year.
As with every time-honored tradition, the “proper” preparation and list of ingredients to be included are debated, however, this was the perfect combination of smooth sweetness.
Bring 2 cups of sugar and 2 cups of water to a boil in a small saucepan, and stir until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat. Add 1 (1-ounce) package of fresh mint, torn.
Let stand 10 minutes. Pour through a wire-mesh strainer into a bowl. Pour 2 tablespoons of mint syrup over ice into a julep cup. Fill with bourbon and, if desired, a splash of club soda. Garnish with fresh mint.
