Arkansas Hospitality Association, Capital Hotel, Little Rock, One Eleven, Spokes Bicycle Shop

Due to his commitment to the Arkansas Hospitality Association, my husband will be spending more time than usual in Little Rock over the coming year. He recently presided over his first meeting as Chairman of the Board, and I was fortunate and excited to make the trip with him to the Arkansas Capital City.

Once the meetings were complete, my husband and I took a leisurely late afternoon walk, and enjoyed a cocktail before changing for dinner. Spending the night at the Capital Hotel and dining at One Eleven indulged a long held fascination – the beautiful surroundings, courteous service, welcome gift of Spiced Pecans hand crafted in the Capital Kitchens, and the 5 course Chef Degustation Menu we enjoyed, more than lived up to every expectation I held.

The next morning we were treated to a tour of the gorgeous kitchens, savored great conversation and were honored by introductions to the incredible people behind the scenes, courtesy of the wonderful, passionate General Manager/Chief Operating Officer/Innkeeper Michael Chaffin, before leaving to visit Spokes Little Rock bicycle shop, walk across the Big Dam Bridge, stop in at Kent Walker Cheeses and make the drive back home to Fayetteville.

California, Farm at the Carneros Inn, Napa Valley, Napa Valley Wine Train

Following a long walk on the trail we had discovered close to the downtown area, we boarded the beautifully restored Napa Valley Wine Train, for a day designed to recall the rich opulence and comfort of travel by rail at the beginning of last century. We savored a multiple course meal, conveyed to us from one of the three kitchens on board, before taking a self-directed tour of the train that concluded in the dessert carriage.

After disembarking, we walked the short distance to the fabulous Oxbow Public Market – an absolute delight for the senses, then luxuriated in some restful time before our dinner reservation at Farm At The Carneros Inn, where we further indulged ourselves with the Seasonal Tasting Menu and exquisite wine pairing.

Angele, Basalt, Goose and Gander, Meritage Resort and Spa, Napa Valley

While Mum was in town and available to watch our kids, my husband and I took the opportunity to leave town for a trip we had bid on and “won” at a local fundraiser. Once we had decided on a date, the entire reservation process was extremely well organized and seamlessly accomplished, resulting in a very pleasant experience – and the flights and our accommodations at the Meritage Resort and Spa were wonderful.

We were famished following the stately although sluggish drive from the airport in San Fransisco, and immediately headed to Goose and Gander, a restaurant in St Helena that came highly recommended by a friend. We savored a delicious and very welcome lunch, which included Crispy Olives with Pistachios and a salad of Summer Cucumber and Greens accompanied by a delicious glass of rose. We then walked the charming streets before setting out for our hotel, stopping for a glass of celebratory sparkling wine on the way, at the Domaine Chandon, where we strolled around the beautiful grounds while enjoying the Classic Tasting, and the people watching at this busy winery.

After relaxing by the pool surrounded by picturesque views of the vineyards, we sought dinner in the pretty downtown of Napa, beginning with a cocktail and appetizers at Angele, seated overlooking the Napa River, before moving on to another course at another restaurant.

We ended our evening at Basalt, a modern looking restaurant with a rustic vibe, that was new since our last visit. We sampled several small plates, the most surprising and delicious was the Dungeness Crab Salad with Avocado, Roasted Jalapeño, Spiced Almonds, Tortilla Chips
