anise seeds, baking, bourbon, celebration, fat tuesday, lemon, Mardi Gras, New Orleans

The Sazerac, originally served at the Sazerac Coffee House in New Orleans, dates back to the 1800’s. This mixture of rye whiskey, Peychauds bitters and angostura bitters with a Herbsaint or absinthe wash and a suggestion of sugar and lemon, is thought by some to be the first and the official cocktail of NOLA.

SAZERAC SHORTBREAD

sazerac shortbread

1 tablespoon bourbon

1/4 cup sugar

2 teaspoons freshly grated lemon zest

1/2 teaspoon anise seeds

1/8 teaspoon salt

8 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into tablespoons

1 cup flour

Heat oven to 325F.

In the stand of an electric mixer, beat sugar and butter until creamy. Add the lemon zest, anise seeds, salt and flour, mix until combined. Stir in the bourbon.

Press evenly into an 8-inch square cake pan. Cut dough into 6 strips crosswise and 4 strips lengthwise. Dock the dough with a fork.

Bake until golden brown, about 25 minutes. Remove from oven and cut along the same marks again, then cool completely in the pan on a wire rack.

Enjoy!

bourbon, easy, ginger beer, Ginger Liqueur, lime, mason jar, quick

I made this gorgeous, refreshing drink one night after a long drive home, and after cooking a simple dinner for my daughter, settled on the couch with my book to enjoy the peace of the evening.

I love the fun, contemporary idea of serving it in a mason jar, but I just really wanted my cocktail in a traditional cocktail glass, without the chill of the ice.

We recently had friends over for a long awaited and greatly anticipated dinner party. They brought wines to pair with each course and made the most delicious aperitif, a Sarsaparilla Manhattan.

Ever since that appetizing evening, I have had a penchant for bourbon based cocktails, ordering a Manhattan to start the evening when out for dinner, or mixing up a Fig Old Fashioned or Elderflower Old Fashioned at home as a relaxing and delicious end to a busy evening.

FIG OLD FASHIONED

fig old fashioned

1 fig

1 1/2 ounces bourbon

1/2 ounce freshly squeezed orange juice

1/4 ounce maple syrup

1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar

Remove the stem from the fig and cut it into quarters. Place the fig pieces in the bottom of a cocktail shaker. Add the maple syrup and muddle into a paste. Add the bourbon, orange juice and balsamic vinegar, mix together then fill the shaker with ice. Shake and strain into a glass with ice.

Enjoy!

I had planned to meet a group of friends for yoga, and amidst the lovely array of appetizers, and catch up chat and cocktails we even managed to move a little. I blended Elderflower Bellinis for us to share and having an abundance of peach nectar enabled me to enjoy other peach inspired cocktails throughout the week.
