easy, lime, mint, quick, sumac, vodka

With my Husband away hunting wild turkey, my youngest son at a sleep over, and my daughter at a sewing lesson – I dropped my oldest child at his school dance (wearing dark green Boy Scout shorts and a shirt in a color that didn’t remotely match – but bravely choosing to go even though none of his friends would be there) I ended up with two delicious hours ALL TO MYSELF on a Friday night!! It was a glorious relaxing time, and once every one I was responsible for had been picked up, returned home, and readied for bed, I continued to savor the evening but this time with an exquisite, relaxing cocktail in hand.

SUMAC MINT FIZZ

sumac mint fizz

3/4 cup sugar

3 tablespoons sumac

2 limes, halved and sliced, plus wedges for serving

1/2 cup fresh mint leaves

vodka

sparkling water

Bring sugar and 3/4 cup water to a boil in a small saucepan, stirring until sugar is dissolved. Stir in sumac. Remove from heat, let cool completely. Strain mixture, discarding solids. Refrigerate, covered until cold.

Muddle limes and mint in the bottom of a large pitcher. Stir in vodka and sumac syrup. Add ice and top with sparkling water (I mixed the cocktail in a glass, adjusting the amount of ingredients). Serve in ice-filled glasses garnished with lime wedges and additional mint.

Enjoy!

best place to live, Fayetteville Arkansas, gin, honey, Licor 43, lime, tea, US News and World Report

I am deeply thankful to call Fayetteville, Arkansas home, and was super excited that this little part of the world was recently recognized as the third best place to live by U.S. News and World Reports. Data driven and unbiased, this conclusion was based on factors such as quality of life, a strong economy, and the excellence of the local schools. I found the components of the Rosa Mae cocktail as interesting and varied and wonderful as those of my adopted home town. Cheers!!

ROSA MAE

rosa mae

1 cup gin

1 tea bag

1 1/2 tablespoons honey

6 tablespoons fresh lime juice

6 tablespoons Licor 43

soda water

lime wedges

bitters

Combine gin and tea bag in a measuring cup. Let steep for 5 minutes. Discard tea bag. Stir honey and 1 1/2 teaspoons of water in a small bowl and add to the tea-infused gin. Mix in lime juice and Licor 43.

Fill 2 glasses with ice cubes. Pour half of mixture into a cocktail shaker and fill with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into prepared glasses, dividing equally. Top each with a splash of soda water. Discard ice in shaker and repeat to make 2 more cocktails. Garnish each drink with a lime wedge and a dash of bitters.

Enjoy!

Arkansas Black Apple, black walnut bitters, Classic, easy, ginger beer, lime, local, regional, twist

I applauded and wanted to honor the original and creative addition of regional flavors to this classic cocktail. I slowly assembled the ingredients over a matter of weeks from several different stores in the area, causing the first Arkansas Black Apples I picked up from our local supermarket to deteriorate before I found the Black Walnut Bitters. But, eventually, in a wonderful coincidence, I had gathered everything I needed and greatly enjoyed the refreshing fruit of my diligent efforts.

BLACK APPLE MULE

1/2 cup Arkansas Black Apple, diced

1/2 lime

2 dashes black walnut bitters

1 1/2 ounces vodka

2 ounces ginger beer

apple slice for garnish

Fill a copper mug with ice. In a cocktail shaker, muddle the diced apple with lime juice and bitters. Shake mixture. Add vodka and shake again. Strain mixture into copper mug. Top with ginger beer and garnish with an apple slice.

We were firmly caught up in the powerball frenzy last week, and along with millions of others bought tickets. We had so much fun dreaming and scheming and imagining what we would do with our gazillions of dollars!!

I couldn’t wait to see the winning numbers being drawn, and excitedly mixed up a delicious, fruity cocktail to sip while watching the show, and eventually to salute the actual three winners across the country.

bourbon, easy, ginger beer, Ginger Liqueur, lime, mason jar, quick

I made this gorgeous, refreshing drink one night after a long drive home, and after cooking a simple dinner for my daughter, settled on the couch with my book to enjoy the peace of the evening.

I love the fun, contemporary idea of serving it in a mason jar, but I just really wanted my cocktail in a traditional cocktail glass, without the chill of the ice.

SHOO-FLY PUNCH

1/4 teaspoon bitters
